Increase the export value of surimi and fishmeal

The surimi production and export industry is and will grow strongly because it is considered a popular seafood product thanks to its cost-effectiveness and is used as an important ingredient in a number of dishes, especially seafood in Asian cuisine. In addition, consumers favor surimi because of its high nutritional value and suitable shelf life.

In the past 5 years, each year Vietnam earned 300 - 420 million USD from exported surimi products, including marine fish surimi and pangasius surimi, accounting for 4%-5% of Vietnam's total seafood export turnover. Among hundreds of frozen, processed, live, dried seafood products... surimi is a segment with room and development potential because of the appropriate characteristics of domestic fisheries as well as the trend of increasing consumption. Therefore, over the same period, Vietnam's fish paste and surimi export markets are increasingly expanding. Currently, surimi products have been exported to more than 40 markets around the world.

Korea is still Vietnam's number one import market for fish paste and surimi. Along with that, Thailand, China, and Japan are also large markets. However, import volume is trending down.

“The market for surimi products is Korea, Thailand, Japan, China, Malaysia, America, etc. Restaurants serving surimi in countries like Japan and Korea have a lot of customers. This is a good opportunity for Vietnamese surimi processing enterprises to find and expand the market for this product line, including surimi produced from marine fish materials and produced from Vietnamese pangasius" - Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Sac, President of VASEP share. Fishmeal is also a product with many opportunities to boost exports in the coming years. According to VASEP leaders, each year Vietnam produces 530,000 - 540,000 tons of fishmeal, of which 200,000 - 280,000 tons are exported, including fishmeal produced from marine fish and fishmeal produced from pangasius by-products. In terms of value, in the first 10 months of 2023, we exported 108 million USD of fishmeal of all kinds.
